The Tax Collector’s
Good News

For centuries, biblical historians have postulated theories about how the Gospel of Matthew came into being. It is the first Gospel in the Christian Bible, and is often considered the paramount description of the adult life of Jesus of Nazareth.

Archeologists have yet to discover an original or an early manuscript. There is a small papyrus fragment (in Greek) at Oxford arguably dating to 260 CE. The earliest full copy probably dates to a period 300 hun- dred years after it first appeared. When was it written? For years, many argued 50-60 CE. Now, the con- sensus seems to be a few years after 70 CE. But this is a moving target. A new archaeological find could occur any day.

Happy Readers

“Mr. Hushon brings to life a little known, but incredibly important aspect of early Christian history in plausible, erudite prose.

Maria G – Journalism Professor Emerita, NYC

Clever story-telling that raises as many questions as it answers.

Phillip T, General US Army Ret. Amateur Historian

Interesting perspective that gives a realist some ideas about how this Gospel came to be. Perhaps more accurate that most “Sunday School” explanations
